Mobile Lenses

While working at Moment I was responsible for doing all the engineering work on dozens of mobile lens products. First we moved our manufacturing to a new factory, that required me to re-engineer all the old style lenses using new optics from the new factory. Then we launched a completely new line of lenses that was developed around a newer generation of optics for newer phones.

Each new lens was mostly made of aluminum and steel but they also each had a number of accessories to go with them such as injection molded lens caps and filter mounts. They also had to all work with the case mounts and clip on mounts that we made every year for all new phones. This involved me traveling to and working with our factory partners in China and making sure that all the tolerances and QC steps matched up at all the factories. It took many trips over a few years to get this launched.

Every year I was also responsible for the engineering work on phone cases. This involves getting CAD data from leaked sources and working with an industrial designer to get the shaping correct. Then taking that design and adding in all the over-molded parts for lens mounts and strap attachments. Then working with factory partners to actually make the cases. We made typically had 6 to 8 new cases every single year, keeping track of all the projects with all the factories was very challenging but very rewarding when it all worked.
